How to Measure & Choose the Right Size for Medical Support Products

Why Size Matters for Medical Support Products

An incorrectly sized medical support product can be worse than no support at all. A product that's too tight can restrict blood flow and cause discomfort, while one that's too loose won't provide adequate support or compression. Getting the right fit ensures:

  • Maximum therapeutic benefit
  • Comfortable all-day wear
  • Proper compression distribution
  • No slipping or bunching

How to Measure for Knee Guards & Knee Braces

What You'll Need

  • A flexible measuring tape
  • A pen and paper to record measurements

Measurement Steps

  1. Stand up straight with your weight evenly distributed on both legs
  2. Knee circumference: Measure around the centre of your kneecap
  3. Thigh circumference: Measure 15cm (6 inches) above the centre of your kneecap
  4. Calf circumference: Measure 15cm (6 inches) below the centre of your kneecap

Tips

  • Measure in the morning before any swelling occurs
  • Don't pull the tape too tight — it should be snug but not compressing the skin
  • If you're between sizes, consider your priority: compression (go smaller) or comfort (go larger)

How to Measure for Compression Stockings

Compression stockings require the most precise measurements because incorrect sizing can reduce their therapeutic effectiveness.

For Knee-High Stockings

  1. Ankle circumference: Measure at the narrowest point just above the ankle bone
  2. Calf circumference: Measure at the widest point of the calf muscle
  3. Length: Measure from the bottom of the heel to the crease behind the knee

For Thigh-High Stockings

In addition to the above:

  1. Thigh circumference: Measure at the widest point of the thigh
  2. Leg length: Measure from the bottom of the heel to the gluteal fold

Important Notes

  • Measure first thing in the morning before any swelling develops
  • If one leg is larger than the other, use the larger measurements
  • Always compare your measurements with the specific product's size chart

How to Measure for Ankle Braces

  1. Ankle circumference: Measure around the narrowest part of the ankle (just above the ankle bones)
  2. Shoe size: Most ankle braces also correspond to shoe size for a quick reference

How to Measure for Wrist Supports

  1. Wrist circumference: Measure around the wrist at the wrist crease (where the wrist bends)
  2. Left or right: Make sure to select the correct hand

How to Measure for Back Braces

  1. Waist circumference: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist (usually at the navel level)
  2. Hip circumference: For lumbar supports, also measure around the widest part of your hips

How to Measure for Cervical Collars

  1. Neck circumference: Measure around the middle of the neck
  2. Neck height: Measure from the base of the neck (where it meets the shoulder) to the jawline

General Tips for All Products

  • Measure bare skin — don't measure over clothing
  • Use a flexible tape — rigid rulers won't give accurate circumference measurements
  • Have someone help — it's easier to get accurate measurements with assistance
  • Measure both sides — if one limb is larger, use the larger measurements
  • Re-measure periodically — body measurements can change over time
